Traveled from Mount Ulap to BGC for a different kind of Sky Race! Two years ago, I was a part of the media crew for Active Pinas. Now that I get to try it, what an experience! Lucky to win 3rd place in my age category. 😇
It was harder than I expected. My heart rate escalated pretty quick from the first 10 floors of stair running. Then I switched to power hiking and grabbing the rails starting at Floor 25. I was able to catch up with the runners from the previous waves. I could see from their faces and their form that I was not the only one having a tough time. I mustered all the strength from my tired legs and kept pushing. Exhaling every step and catching my breath at the flat parts. Some of the runners told us that the route this year was more difficult than the last (I did not know there’s such routes in this thing). I saw a medical crew with a standby stretcher at the halfway point. It wasn’t impossible that someone would collapse due to the lack of oxygen inside the stairwell. As the number on each floor change, it seemed forever to reach the finish line at the Penthouse. I managed to recover in the last 10 floors and was able to run the last few flights to finish at 10 mins and 4 seconds. A bit slow for a newbie stair-climber. Hehe.
All is well, I enjoyed the challenge and hope more people get to try it next year. There’s a fun challenge of 37 floors and a team of 4 challenge. I’m glad to meet new friends and health enthusiasts through this event.
Special shoutout to Brooks Running Philippines for providing the shoes for this run- Ghost 9. It felt light, comfy, and springy during the stair-repeats. It’s toebox width is perfert for me. And thanks to Amihan Sports Gear for designing a new version of the Go Lite. The V2 held my race bib nicely and I was able to put my phone in it during the run.
Challenge Done:
Total Floors: 59
Total Steps: 2353
Elevation: 250m
