Nevertheless, amidst these criticisms, there is one remarkable piece of news that Cambodians can take immense pride in: Bou Samnang, their female runner in the 5,000m event.
Cambodian Runner Bou Samnang came in last place in the women’s 5,000m final at the Southeast Asian Games 2023, but she won the hearts of many for her perseverance.

The never-say-die spirit of Samnang did not go unnoticed by Cambodia’s prime minister, resulting in her receiving a $10,000 award from Prime Minister Hun Sen. The Cambodian leader expressed his intention to recognize Southeast Asian Games athlete Bou Samnang as a means of promoting perseverance.
